Lots of discussions on why rider X can't / won't pass MM recently....and it dawned on me after listening to some podcasts.
MM is from the "Alien Era" where the likes of Rossi, Pedrosa, Lorenzo, and Stoner (even though he didn't race MM directly). These guys had talent, good strategy, and big balls on the track. There were so many good battles between them, some still controversial to this day!
With MM as the last of this breed, knowing the ins and outs of these tracks and strategies to attack or defend. This is apparent when MM says he wasn't the fastest but he knew precisely where to put his bike for defense lap after lap after lap. Bez may be from VR46 academy, but he is no Rossi.
Kind of funny if you think about it: Rossi started out with so so competition culminating into more difficulty at his career end. MM, on the other hand, had to fight against arguably the best riders in MotoGP history to start his run, and now is on a less challenging grid. So of course, it looks like sometimes he's not getting challenged (he isn't), though it isn't for the sake of trying.
