If'n I was looking for an old Indian I would want it in red.

I searched the WWW and found that one black one sold at Mecum in 2023 for $9k. It was black and didn't have the gold pin-stripping.

Indian red . Lol.
Been many threads on that topic on boards of yore.
Any Indian I would ever have again would be in Indian red.
Indian red. It was a DuPont color.
As a DuPont owned Indian for a while.
IMHO Indian red is not red and not burgundy.
Somewhere in between

It is called Midnight Canyon Red by Dupont.

I guess someone was in the canyons in Utah at night and saw that color.

Both PPG and Dupont use that name for paint just different code numbers.
In 84-87 ford used it on trucks and Mercury's. Fleet used it in 1990 on tractor trucks.
I remember seeing some of those vehicles and never put it together. There was a 80's Mustang that had a color that I thought was that color but it's slightly different. I didn't know it until I started looking searching the color online. It has a bit more brownish hue to it. They called it Medium Canyon Red.
They also had a Light Canyon Red that looked like it had a more orangish hue to it.

Yeah a punch of crap you probably could care less about. I can geek out on paint colors. I like painting cars and motorcycles. I even like minor body work, taking out dents and body filler and such. Just don't care much for the mindless sanding of primer.

Well I am not sure about later DuPont colors.
Indian red has been debated by so called Indian experts for 60 years.
One thing is it did not have metallic . So if any of those later paints were metallic it’s not Indian red.
I do thank you for your research.
I don’t think tractors were metallic . But I can’t recall seeing any trucks or mustangs that were not .
Metallic is a big deal since it tends to hide orange peel so prevalent in robotic painting.

Sanding primer is actually the skill part of body work .
I wouldn’t call it mindless to those whom consider it an art form. It’s why high end paint jobs cost so much .

Ford had both metallic and non metallic Midnight Canyon Red according to a paint chart I saw but can't find now.
I'm not 100% sure but I think a friend had a F150 that didn't have metallic in it. Maybe it was just faded.
Used to see a lot of square bodied trucks in this color.

This site gives the years it was used. It's a good site to find the factory color paint of a vehicle. I'm using it to help pick out the color I want to paint my 55 F100.

That’s wicked interesting. Although I don’t see anything in the 40’s that looks like Indian red to me.
I would have to look to see when DuPont sold out his interest in Indian . Off hand idk and idk if that affected what paint was used.

I never knew Dupont had ownership of Indian until you mentioned it.
Looks like it was 1930 when Paul du Pont merged in to Indian and managed it until November 1, 1945 when it was handed over to Ralph Rogers who had it until closing time.

I was looking on 101 Associates web site, a site dedicated to '28-31 Scouts. It was mentioned that even if you had the paint codes from back then it would be impossible to match because the pigments are manufactured differently now than they were back in the days.

A guy that has his bikes judge by AMCA uses the Dupont Midnight Canyon with a black primer. It's the closest match that he can get with todays paints.

I guess the only other option is to take a NOS part into a paint dealer and pay them to mix up a match.

Rogers unfortunately didn’t have the control that DuPont had. Bean counters forced Roger’s to push the vertical bikes out in the market before they were ready and stop producing chiefs in 1945? 46?
Those verticals were a flop which led to chiefs coming back in 47 but too late to save to save Indian. Indian was split into 2 . Indian manufacturing and Indian sales corp owned by Brockhouse of England. That’s where you get enfield chiefs from as Brockhouse was an English bike  importer.

Re: Craigslist Curiosities

Whst got Indian in trouble was the army 741’s. They were developed this 500cc bike in response to the military. Military wanted 500cc as europes military bikes were.
I think it was bill harley that refused to sleeve down their 45’s which meant the 45 out performed  the 741 I don’t  recall the numbers. But Indian had the 841 developed, which was a bmw style military motorcycle , but when the Jeep came out the military bike orders were canceled which hurt Indian more than Harley . Harley’s 45 was more adaptable to civilian use .
So that’s what preceded DuPont getting out and some  kind of consortium taking over with Rogers  as head .

The paint has always been an issue as far back as I can recall which is early 70’s . There were diehards still using Indians as everyday riders.
